Hi, welcome to the pause between. If this is your first time here, hi, I'm Ate Gia. And if you're returning, welcome back. Thank you so much for spending your time with me today. I'm really, truly grateful for each one of you who chose to spend your time with me today. In this episode, we're diving into a topic that's often talked about generally, but rarely in a way that's deeply personal. Rest. you can hear about rest in totality but it is not talked about or discussed in a way that's actually designed for you for a long time i really thought that rest had a formula what i mean is if that formula is something that i applied into my life then i will be able to rest but that's not how it works. So for example, gagayahin ko lang yung routine ng isang vlogger na nakita ko or influencer which I think is cool and it's dreamy. Alam mo yun? Yung pag nakikita ko yung mga routine nila, wow. I feel like that's something that I need to do rin. I need to drink green tea, I need to do yoga, juice, meditate, and boom, I should be able to rest. but it's not like that. What works for one person might totally drain another. Rest isn't one size fits all. Think of it as like skincare or your fashion style some fit sometimes it's not it's not flattering for your shape or just like skincare there are benefits to your type of skin it is suited for your skin type and skin color but some isn't it's just like that and there are also rest that fits your current season or phase of life because just like life your rest should change too so in this episode we'll be trying to figure out what what kind of rest fits for you. And one general reminder before we start. Knowing about it is one thing, but learning to rest takes practice. And with that practice, you don't have to get it right. Hindi palaging yung natutry mo is something that's fitted for you right away. And it's okay. You just have to start. In this episode, take what resonates and feel free to leave the rest. Yes, pun intended. Let's begin with some helpful reflections to help you figure out what kind of rest or reset your body truly needs or maybe your mind or your soul may be asking for disclaimer if you're right now too tired to even think about what's draining you because that happens at e I'm so tired i don't even have the energy to go and think whatever you would like me to think it's okay there's no rush here you might want to you know put this episode at the back of your mind and revisit it and then visit it again more than once because life shifts and our rest shifts too so you just have to start small first and one way to start is to ask yourself what parts of my day leaves me feeling most drained and what part of it or what part of my state is being exhausted is it mentally emotionally physically and that's your clue again you just have to start noticing it you don't have to fix it all so with the question that I have what parts of your day leaving you feeling most drained start from the start are you feeling drained after you waking up are you feeling drained when you're doing your tasks at work or are you feeling drained just being you just functioning as being you just being an ate just being a mother just being a student and let's start from there what part of being quote-unquote a student a parent a worker or a designer or a creative or a content creator feeling you most drained. Again, you don't have to find the solutions immediately. You just have to start noticing. And now that we noticed it, I would like to encourage you to list it. Along with this episode is a free PDF in the show notes that you can also use while we're trying to figure out the rest that works for you in this episode. From there, that's one step already. Again, no pressure. Just one step at a time. Now that we have the list or maybe you have the idea already, let's try to explore the different kinds of rest. This will be a long episode and there will be chapter notes so you can skip along if you feel like that's something that you don't resonate at this point in time. And you can also pause any time and come back to it. And let's start. Physical Rest Let's start with the most obvious. Yet often misunderstood kind of rest. Physical. When we usually say, pagod na ako, or when you hear somebody say na pagod na siya, we always assume that it's the body talking. And sometimes it is. Especially if you're sore, you're stiff, your muscles are tired, or you're running on zero to less So, the ending... Tulog ka ng tulog or you will say to that person na matulog ka or magpahinga ka. Pero ang ending, pagod pa rin yung taong yun or pagod ka pa rin. Why? Because it's the other types of rest that they need. It's not the physical. So, how do you know that it's the physical rest that you need? ang mga pwede mong itanong sa sarili mo is, is my body aching? Or may masakit ba sa katawan ko? Is my shoulder stiff? Is it tense? Am I sitting or standing all day? Or on the other hand, am I moving all day? Nagmarathon ba ako? Nagplay ng some kinds of sports? Which is good, by the way. But... If you're physically tired, you will also notice that your muscles and your organs are trying to send you signals. On the other hand, if you are not moving, it will also give you the signals. Are you physically sluggish? Even if your mind feels fine. And this is outside of different conditions. if you have a different if you have a condition that is diagnosed or maybe you feel like it's a different kind of signal or it could be a symptom please go ahead and check yourselves with a medical doctor to find out what's causing the physical tiredness or exhaustion because it could be something else on the other hand if you know yourself that you you've been moving for quite a while and your body's asking for rest there could be two types that you can do the first one is the passive kind of rest this kind of rest is it's encouraging you to be just still So that's stillness. It's a kind of rest for your body. Examples could be sleep and not just sleep. It should be quality sleep. Also the naps. It could be lying down. It could be warm bath or saunas. It's just encouraging you to passively let the time flow and letting your body rest. On the other hand, there is what we call the active rest. It is the kind of rest that encourages light movements for you to restore your body's natural rhythm. What I mean is, it could be stretching, it could be light walk, or even breath walking, or even just breathing. And breathing is something that you can access 24x7. If you feel like your body's tense, breathing is really a good help. So it might feel weird na it should be rest but it's still active. And it might be counterintuitive. But there are light movements that restores and refresh your body. Konting galaw lang naman siya para ma- how to move because it's been sluggish you know what i mean so today i would like to encourage you to have an introspection if your body is aching and it's it's really asking for you to rest ask yourself Is my body craving for stillness or some movement? And that's a small question I know, but it can lead to big resets. Mental rest. Now, let's talk about mental rest. Mental fatigue is tricky. Unlike physical tiredness that has a signal in your body because it's aching or your eyes may be droopy or your eye bags are full, the mental fatigue hides in plain sight. Ito yung hindi mo agad madi-distinguish sa kaibigan mo or sa mga kasamahan mo sa trabaho unless they will be showing signs of it. So, paano ba natin malalaman kung tayo ay nangangailangan na ng mental rest? There are some easy and subtle signs that I can give you. For example, ang tagal mo nang pumili ng ulam or ng Netflix show na papanoorin mo. Hindi dahil choosy ka, kundi pagod na yung utak mo to decide. This is decision fatigue. Studies made on decision fatigue shows that the more choices we make throughout the day, the less effective our decisions become. That means even the simple task of picking what you eat or an ulam or what show you watch or maybe what to wear can start to feel like it's overwhelming because your mental energy is already low that's a decision to take next is mental fog ito yung parang may cloud sa paligid ng utak mo because you cannot function with focus parang you're all over the place gising ka pero hindi ka talaga present so that's one sign of mental fatigue next is yung nagmo multitasking ka pero ending wala ka talagang natatapos dun yung mga bagay bagay na ginagawa mo because you're focused isn't there it isn't as sharp as before that is a sign of mental fatigue again there may be signs here and there but it's different for every individual your exhaustion or your tiredness might come here and there because we are using our energy in different places but if you notice yourself na nangyayari lahat ng mga binabanggit ko that means your brain is asking for a rest too another sign could be wala kang medyo malaking problema pero parang ang bigat ng pakalamdam mo that's your brain waving a red flag and the tricky part is hindi natin sya namamalain agad ang nangyayari is we just say napagod lang tayo but really it is not our physical body or at some point it is our physical body too but it's really our mind that's overwhelmed Overloaded. Thinking. Planning. Worrying. Non-stop. And let's be real. Sino bang walang iniisip? Lahat naman tayo meron, diba? It could be school, work, family, or even our future. Dagdag pa yung mga group chat na ilang araw mo nang hindi nababalikan. But mental rest isn't giving up. It just means stepping away from the noise. Kahit sandali lang. And I get it. Kahit ako lately, my brain feels like, alam mo yun, yung 32 tabs na naka-open, tapos yung lima naka-freeze, tapos hindi ko na alam kung nasa yung iba. And I used to think then na para makapagpahinga, I needed a whole day or a vacation to rest. But it's not. Mental rest can be simple, short, doable, and it could be quiet. What What are those? Ano nga ba yung pwede mong gawin when you don't have the privilege to have a vacation or a long-term absence? Some examples could be short breaks, nakahit 5 minutes lang away from your to-do list. It could make a difference already. Because it will let your brain not think of the pressure from the to-do list that you need to do. It could be a short walk outside. A short stroll can make you feel better. Kaya yung term na magpapahangin lang ako sa labas is there. Because it's literally letting yourself breathe from whatever you're thinking mentally. And it's could be a way as well to rest physically so I suggest if you have the time even the 5 minutes walk can be or can do wonders for you next brain dump it is something that is gamit na gamit ko yung brain dump whenever I feel like my mind is overflowing and the ideas are there hindi ko na alam kung saan I will get some paper or I will get a notepad it could be physical or virtual that I will just spill my thoughts no filter lahat talaga ng raw thoughts ko nandun kasi it is one way of expressing yourself and letting your thoughts breathe clears your mental space next Thanks. And a very important one is breathing. If you feel like you're going to explode because of that one email that lists down what you need to do because your boss just sends you a list of the do's and you feel overwhelmed, I suggest to just breathe three deep breaths. That three deep breaths can already calm your nerves system and i get it yung mental exhaustion may not be from the to-do list or the amount of workload that you need to do maybe it is just the pressure from yourself to perform and I get it. I totally get it because I've been there. But a lesson that I've learned along the way is to learn to pause and tell myself na hindi lahat ng bagay kailangan tapusin ko ngayon o bigyan ko ng solusyon ngayon. Pwede kong bitawan yung ibang bagay for the meantime. In science, that's what we call cognitive distancing. It is a way to remind yourself that not every thought is urgent and that one pause in between your thoughts, that's already rest. So here's a question for you before ending this specific type of rest. Are you tired from the thinking or are you tired from the pressure behind it? Whatever your answer is, mental rest doesn't mean tuning everything out. It is just creating a little room to breathe. Just a moment where you don't have to hold it all. We're exploring eight types of rest. So if you're too tired to finish right now, you can pause and you can come back anytime or another day but if not we're diving into the third one emotional rest then there's this kind that just like the mental this is the kind of tiredness that we don't always notice emotional fatigue Ito yung pagod na kapag mag-isa ka na lang, mararamdaman mo siya. But whenever you're with other people or you're doing your tasks, you can kind of keep it all together. You smile, you show up, you even take care of others. But when you're alone and inside, you're empty. And that heaviness, you cannot And oops, you're not physically tired. But something feels heavy. That's a sign. Your heart might be tired. Alam mo yung broken-hearted friend ko, sinabi to sakin that I realized that it's not the physical rest that she needs. Sabi niya, madalas daw siyang umiidlip. Kompletong tulog niya. She's active. Nag-sports din siya. Badminton yung sports niya. But she wake up more fired than ever. And because she's brokenhearted, I realized that what she needs is an emotional rest. Because emotional rest is about giving yourself permission to feel without judgment, without fixing. Hindi yung I'll deal with this later or isasantabi mo na lang yung feelings mo. It is also helpful to check in with yourself from time to time. Kamusta na nga ba talaga ako or kamusta na ba yung state of my heart and when you figured out the kailangan ng pahinga ng emotion mo emotional rest can take many forms sometimes it's through deep conversations with the person you love or the person you care about minsan it's through therapy which is also helpful but other times it's as simple as giving yourself small moments to just feel and breathe. Minsan, kailangan mo din lang naman ang mapagsasabihan at makakaintindi sayo ng mga nararamdaman mo. So choose your circle and pick the ones that can empathize with you. Kapag sinabi mong pagod na ako or pagod na yung emosyon ko, someone will be able to get it. Also, crying is a kind of cardio, but it is a kind of rest for your emotions too. So letting yourself cry with or without reason can be healthy. It is also a form of rest and a kind of release for your emotions. Another way is doing something you find joyful. It could be music, a hobby, painting, whatever that you feel is bringing some joy to your life. it could be sitting alone in peace meditating it could be doing something that you have been putting aside something that brings color into your emotions that can boost chemicals in you that's still something regarded as an emotional rest also I suggest that you can also write your feelings no pressure no filter just write whatever you want to write and it's one way of releasing the thoughts that you have in your mind as a mental rest and it is an emotional kind of rest too so whatever kind of rest that you feel is the right one for you whether it is through solitude kung gusto mong mag-isa lang that's okay or kung gusto mo nang you are surrounded by friends who truly value you through connection that's also valid as long as it is something that you feel is for yourself and you have been honest with yourself too minsan kasi nagiging distraction yung yung iba nating ginagawa it's not through connection what I mean with the emotional rest through connection and through solitude is letting yourself feel whatever you want or whatever is your feeling but no judgment from yourself it's just that you are releasing whatever is inside you so that your emotions can breathe if that makes sense okay And if you haven't had that moment yet, it's okay. It's never too late to start. Okay, so far we've explored three types of rest. The physical, the mental, and the emotional. How are you so far? Hopefully, you're still with me. may mga narealize na ba kayo lately that's keeping you exhausted and the kind of rest that you need so if you only have a few minutes left in your commute or break feel free to pause here or stay with me because we will be having our mid reset if you can close your eyes soften your jaw and take a full breath breathe in breathe out here's your 20 seconds of reset We're back. Thank you for shooting the pause with me. If you're continuing this on another day, welcome back. Let's keep going and explore the rest that truly restores you. Social rest. I feel like this is exactly what my body's been asking for. As an introvert, yung social activities, yes, even those that are fun can drain my energy fast. But social rest isn't just for an introvert. It is something that all of us need. Why? Because social tiredness comes from from how those interactions affect us. It is not just from how much we interact. So paano ba nakaka-apekto yung mga interaction na yun sa atin? That's what is causing the social tiredness. And introverts do have a different way of recharging, quote unquote. We often best recharge with solitude. It might sound weird for those extroverts out there, but it is the truth. We find comfort with solitude or being alone. Extroverts, on the other hand, might not feel drained from too much social time, but they can feel exhausted from shallow conversations or from being people who don't spark their energy. Ambiverts, if you don't know ambiverts, they are somewhere in the middle. They are not introvert nor extrovert, they are both. And those kind of person or this kind of people sometimes craves connection and sometimes crave space so whichever you are introvert extrovert or ambivert social rest means tuning into your own energy levels so notice when the social time kind of fills you or when it silently wears you down and it's not about ghosting everyone because you feel like you don't have the social energy. But it's just about finding your own balance. So if you are socially tired, what can I do, Ate Gia? So first, you have to set boundaries. You don't have to say yes to every invite or task. It's okay to say no guilt-free why because you need to protect your energy it could be both for introvert extrovert or ambivert people you have the right to say no if that connection isn't filling your cup And that leads me into the second step. You have to choose quality connections. And it's not about less people. But it's choosing what energy fits or resonates with you. It's carving what energy is better for your soul. Next is unplug. You have to step back from social media platforms. group chat notifications even just for a few hours well diving into this into future episodes but for now you have to learn how to unplug and replug meaning you have to choose when and where you will be spending your energy on social media or even in those group chats it could be even an intensive one it is an intentional disconnection it could be a phone off for the night or just a mini silent retreat it could be that you will be putting your time into another kind of rest that your body or your mind or your soul needs there's also a social rest another reminder that i have is even though you don't judge people or i am not judging people there are people that might be unintentionally draining you and there are also people on the other hand are uplifting you so that's a big hint some well-meaning relationships can be unintentionally exhausting or your friends can be some someone you truly care about but unfortunately when you're with them it could be a one-sided conversation or your body's always alert or your mind's always alert because you have to take care of them and again we don't love them less it's just that we have to find that balance of when you will be connecting with them it's not about loving them less but it's about protecting your energy so in this kind of rest I would like to ask how's your social energy lately do you feel recharged with others or whatever your type is social rest is about honoring whatever you need whether it is leaning in to the people that you are that you find are uplifting and really fills your cup or stepping back away from the noise is the key to truly resting sensory rest now let's go deeper and talk about sensory rest If you're like me, sometimes the world feels like a nonstop blast of noise, screens, bright lights, and even information. And that... stimulation wears you down without you even realizing it and it's not just about noisy places it could be overload from endless tech work demands, and even daily hustle. It could flood your senses and you'll feel tired and fried. Sensory tiredness happens when your senses cannot keep up with all the input. It's like it is stuck on max volume without any pause button. Parang buffering ganun. Sensory rest means giving your senses a break and and dialing down that overload. So what does sensory rest looks like? Again, it could be a screen break, even those short ones lang. Try disconnecting from your phone or even putting it in a night mode or in a lesser screen light in the evening, even finding a quiet spot away from the noise, maybe a cozy corner from your home, a moment in your garden or in nature, somewhere calm, somewhere without the noise, somewhere na walang destruction. It is already a sensory rest. It could be something simple like putting in a lamp with scented candles or creating a chill vibes in one corner of your home or on your bed. That's already a sensory reset. also practice mindful breathing breathing again but promise you breathing is a multiple type of rest in one that you can access 24 7 3 6 5 so those types of rest even though for a few minutes can already reset your senses big time Also, I would like to share this idea from Atomic Habits that I've learned and it stuck with me. It says that you have to create more, more than you consume. So instead of consuming everything from social media and making your senses fried from watching, listening, info overload, you can put it in another way or on the other perspective of creating it means creating with your senses it could be something visual auditory or even something like dancing singing or any form of art because when you do that your senses are still working but it helps you be calm because your energy is shifting and it helps with the sensory flood. We will talk about this more on another episode. But for now, I would like to ask you, how do you usually reset your senses? Kapag pagod na yung mga senses. Pagod na yung mga sensory organs nyo. Yung mga mata nyo, yung mga yung pandilig nyo, parang ang ingay-ingay na. Even yung mga hands nyo na minsan tingly na because it is doing a lot um i would like to hear more from you while waiting for those remember sensory rest isn't about running away it is about stepping back when your senses say okay enough na for now that's just sensory rest creative rest. If you're someone who is on the creative industry or in the content creation industry and you're always coming up with some ideas, even pushing yourself to create something or if you're just someone naturally imaginative, your brain can sometimes feel like an overdrive. meron akong friend na ganun yung sometimes hindi niya maiwasan na mag brainstorm palagi ng ideas and While it is really amazing to see all of those happening real time, minsan kailangan din ang pause button for those that are on the go palagi to always create because it also creates some pressure. And I'm not entirely saying that you have to stop creating but I'm just saying that you have to chill a bit. Why? Because Creative rest also means that your brain can come up with greater ideas and sharper focus. That's backed up by neuroscience. If you missed our first episode, I also discussed that in details there. Actually, yung mga best ideas ko lumalabas sya not when I am actively doing some things. Yung mga ideas ko when I am still when I am walking when I am meditating when I am in the shower when I am in my matcha or drinking a cup of coffee so those ideas are coming up more when you have that kind of rest so again I'm not saying that you have to stop creating it's just that you are dialing down from the overwhelmed pressure of creating more so when you when you admit or when you feel like you need a creative rest and you're tired of creating what can you do so you don't have to do something grand it could be something simple and low-key it could be a physical work like organizing your desk taking a slow walk or even Even cleaning. Yes, cleaning can be oddly calming because you're not creating something but your body is occupied. So it means that your creative pressure is dialing down while you're doing something low-key. Also, it can be as simple as going outside. soaking up in the nature or could be doing a spa day it can help your brain spark fresh ideas when you least expect it also for those that are always on the problem solving mode you can binge watch a silly show or go in a museum admire art without the pressure to create anything yourself and maybe some ideas can be drawn from there as well so for creatives and not so creatives but accidental content creators like me what one little thing you can do to give your creativity a breather and you know sometimes the best ideas sneak up on you when you're letting your brain relax so creative rest is giving yourself the permission to just Just be, even just for a while. Functional rest. Do you ever feel like this feeling that you're running on empty? Not because you're physically exhausted, that's different, but because your body is juggling a million daily demands. Functional tiredness hits when you're constantly switching roles, maybe being a daughter, a friend, an employee, or maybe a boss of your own life. And keeping all those balls in the air drains your energy in a way that a nap can just fix. Functional rest isn't talked about much, but it's actually a game changer. It means giving yourself a break from those everyday tasks. Not by doing nothing, but by slowing down enough to recharge so you can tackle what really needs your focus and energy. So, what does functional rest look like? Number one, delegate or automate tasks. This is when you ask for help with chores or errands or doing everything yourself. It could be eliminating those tasks that can be automatic or it can be uniformed. Remember those that are using a uniform when they're going to work, just like the highly successful people like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. They actually use just one type of uniform a day because they are doing a lot of functions in their life. So they would like to uniform or automate some tasks that would not require their decision making or they're functional. Next, simplify your to-do list. What I mean is you cut back on non-essential activities and focus on what really matters. So in your everyday life, ask yourself, what is something that I can push aside for now that is really not essential for me? And just focus on those that really matters to you. Because if you're juggling too many things at once, you can only do so much. So try to be intentional with your energy. Treat it as a limited resource because it is. You only have a limited energy at a time. And if you're doing a lot of things at once, and I understand that we are all that, it's just that we have the priority what really matters in our lives next you have to take mini breaks even a few minutes of stretching breathing during a busy days can help you reset and also those tasks that you can do in advance when your energy is not depleted yet you can do that what i mean is for example meal prep you you you are doing your busy self a favor if you're doing the meal preparation in advance because you don't have to function at that specific day because you're doing a lot of times in the weekdays, for example. So you're doing the meal prep on the weekends. So those moved or simple choices can save your functional energy or your mental energy. Functional rest helps you stay in the game without burning out. Sometimes the best move is just to pause and catch your breath. Pahinga muna and then lawan ulit. Soulful rest. this is the last one and thank you for listening this episode because it's quite a lot but this is also important sometimes you feel tired in a way that not just your body or mind but your spirit feels drained too it is that kind of tiredness now when it hits life gets heavy and your daily grind makes you forget what you're even doing what you're doing. That's when your soul needs rest. Soulful or reflective rest is about reconnecting with your deeper purpose and finding a sense of peace inside. And it's not overnight and it's not also about religion. Think of it as tuning in to what truly grounds you beyond the everyday hustle. Whether it's through nature meditation or just quietly sitting with your thoughts soulful rest is about feeling aligned with who you really are so what does soulful rest look like again it could be a quiet reflection it could be a moment to pause and check in with what matters to you checking in with your values values your purpose and really digging deeper at the end of the line what is really essential for you along with this is a centering practice it might be a prayer a meditation a walk in nature or anything that helps you feel steady and calm because it makes space for meaning when you slow down and do the things that feels your soul whether that's creating helping others or soaking in stillness or beauty it will let you connect to something bigger. It is all about feeling connected to a deeper source of peace. Soulful rest is about finding a space to pause and to remember what truly matters. This type of rest is not about doing more but about being in the present moment. And that's a wrap on all the different types of rest. Again, we have the eight types of rest and it could be something that you need just one or two or a combination of those types of rest because you might feel drained in more ways than one so that's physical rest mental rest emotional rest social rest sensory rest creative rest functional rest and finally soulful rest. Now, when it comes to actually putting this into practice, here's the key. Pay close attention to how each kind of rest makes you feel. What truly recharges you and what leaves you feeling refreshed. And what still drains you. So maybe you're emotionally burnt out and craving some quiet time to be just yourself. Or maybe life demands... feels heavy and what you really need is a functional rest maybe giving yourself some permission to slow down and simplify sometimes it could be you needing more sleep or less screen time or just a little more space to breathe again you can use one or more tools at once depending on what your life needs at this specific phase and season of your life so Personally, lately, I've been juggling with a lot of professional and personal things that my brain feels foggy and exhausted. So, what helped me? Automating small tasks, asking for help, taking at least once a month to unplug completely. And when I came back, I feel lighter, more energized. and it wasn't just one kind of rest it was a mix of what we've talked about so if you're starting i recommend to start just small make one little intentional change it doesn't click right away that's totally okay rest it's a process not a one-time overnight fix. And you don't have to try everything at once. Just pick one thing that feels doable today and go from there. Every tiny pause you take for yourself is already a step forward. Remember, rest isn't a reward. It is your daily power-up. Like charging your phone, but for your soul. But for your soul. So don't let your battery hit 1% before you plug in and reset.
